I lived in Williamsburg for twenty years and every single time I walked or rode my bike on the Williamsburg Bridge I would meet this beanpole of a woman with big eyes and a wild mop of curly red hair striding across it with her sketchbook. Susanna Heller has made literally thousands of drawings of the city, mostly done at breakneck speed: the World trade Center before and after, a burnt-out church in Harlem, construction sites, views from the bridges, etc. and the following ten sketches of Manhattan and the prevailing weather (note “thunder” below) made from the waterfront on the north Brooklyn side from Greenpoint to below the bridge.
