Lisa Hein + Bob Seng / Kerry Law

Lisa saw this painting at Kerry’s Bushwick open studio and told him on the spot she wanted to buy it. It took nearly a year to close the deal, but Kerry honored our dibs when other fans started closing in at his Centotto show. We love the fresh execution in a single sitting, and the novelty of depicting rows of graves from the side. People don’t recognize the subject for quite a while.
Little did we know NYC cemeteries would become our recreational haunt during the pandemic. “Graveyard” brings all that lawn inside our apartment. It has the same bouncy feel as the Talking Heads’ “And She Was”*: a pop song about dying in a car accident. Death’s head may have bad teeth, but it’s grinning.

“The Collector” is an ongoing series in which I ask people to talk about a painting or a drawing they own. See other installments here.
