What I like about Phillips work is her crazy 3D animated emotionality. The frog sneaks by, one flower is seduced while the other pretends not to notice, a bird ponders origami, they hide, they complain, they despair, they woo, they look confused…
Here is what Phillips says: “I start drawing with absolutely nothing in mind, a sort of mindless doodle. One thing attaches to another thing, and then a conversation happens. I do many starts that don’t interest me, then return to complete the drawings later. What I initially thought was awful often becomes interesting.
I work a job that requires me to sit around and do nothing for hours. Time and boredom created most of this work. I draw with a black Bic pen, but to me, the pictures don’t come alive until I add color with gel pens.”
Parents—if you want your children to be artists, be sure they are bored with nothing to do—but do you want your child to be an artist?
