Sketchbook #26: Dorothy Robinson

Dorothy Robinson’s work makes me dream of long journeys through enchanted landscapes, walkabouts, and quests.

An excerpt from Basho’s travel journals : “plovers fly away, the evening grows later/ with cold mountain winds.”

Here is what Robinson says about the first 6 drawings:
The longscroll is a continuous ink drawing from around 2012 or so. I made several of these using black ink and long rolls of 12-inch wide rice paper. Something about the black ink spreading into a completely different, super-absorbent paper, and having no reason to go back or stop, was very compelling.

2023-2024 – have been goofing around with new materials. Applying homemade casein ground to different kinds of paper, and mixing a kind of ink/paint out of casein and powdered pigment derived from charred animal bones. Just moving this substance around without thinking.

I think I’ve learned something important here from a wonderful painter: Don’t Stop and Don’t Think!
